The heat shield exists to deflect grease dropping from food as it barbecues. Moisture drips from the food from the convectional heat inside the closed gas grill hood and can flare up or drip into the burner and clog ports. The heat shield deflects the grease towards the drip tray and protects the barbeque grill burners.

Heat plates also exist to assist with heat distribution. As heat is generated from the flames emitting from the burners it is easy to get hot and cold spots at the cooking surface. The heat plates force the heat to rise around the heat plate and through the slits in the plate to provide a more even distribution of heat at the grilling surface.
