Capital BBQ Grill Replacement Ignitor Module

The barbecue grill module is the part of the grill that generates a spark and sends the pulse of electricity to the electrodes in the grill. The electrodes look like miniature spark plugs and behave the same way spark plugs do when the module is working. The module usually does not have its own ground but the electrodes connection inside the barbecue function to ground the ignition. Testing the module is as simple as touching a wire across the spade connectors. This two outlet module is most often found in Capital Cooking Systems PSQ model barbecue grills. The module below with Four outlets is going extinct. Fortunately the module is located inside the front control panel and is a simple very part to install. Connected ignition parts are also easy to replace.

Module Wiring Connections

Replacement module for Capital gas grills is 2 5/8 inches long without brackets for screws and is 3 1/2 inches long with the round screw holes. The module is 1 1/4 inch wide. As seen in this image the electrode wires plug right into the flat male spades. The male spade tabs for the ignition switch-button are wider than the electrode male spade connections.

See Below to see how to test the ignition assembly to determine if the ignitor modules needs to be replaced.

Does Your Module Need To Be Replaced?

If the ignition assembly is not working does that mean the Module is failing or does it mean the button is not working or is the electrode inside the barbecue not working?

We can simply unplug the electrode wires and push the ignition button to see if the module creates sparks. If the module does create sparks when the electrodes are unplugged but does not create sparks when the electrodes are plugged in then we know the problem is with the electrodes or the ground connection through the electrodes.

If the module does not spark then we remove the module and unplug everything. Then we plug in one of the button wires with the other end unplugged from the button-switch. On this other end, here we pushed in a raw metal piece of a wire and then touched the raw metal to the other button plug spade. This completes the circuit just as if the button were pushed.

At this point if the module works then we know the problem is with the button-switch. If the module does not spark then the module should be replaced.

Instructions to Easily Test An Ignition Module For Any BBQ Grill.

Here we are closing the electrical circuit by connecting the 2 male spades that are normally plugged into the button. The Button interrupts the current when it is not pushed. Normally we use a screwdriver and lay it across the 2 male spade plugs but the Capital module spades are perpendicular to one another we cannot do that.

Instead we used the button wire and touched the tip to the other plug. On the left side of the module on the screen note one end of the wire is plugged-in to the module. We stuck a metal wire into the plug on the other side of the wire and touch it to the male spade plug on the module. This is the same as pressing the button but without the actual button so we can determine if the button or the module has failed.

main burner replacement igniter electrode

Usually when your barbecue will not light the problem is not the module but the electrodes -- and they are not usually broken. Because the electrodes are inside the barbecue grill they are sometimes hit by falling greases, marinades, dirt, seasonings, cleaning products, etc. Just like a dirty (fouled) spark plug in a car if the electrode has black soot from the gas flmaes or seasonings on the steel tip it will not be able to spark.

Check the electrode tip and the area around the electrode and cross over tube and make sure there is a clean area for the spark to connect.

Capital Grill Parts

Larger Module replacement has 4 spade outlets to connect up to 4 electrodes in the grill. As you can see in the video above the Capital module is fast and powerful -- much more powerful than its predessor at DCS. Using a separate button allows another part that can fail but failing modules and buttons are rare. Usually an ignition problem is the fault of dirty electrodes.
