Viking BBQ Grill Repair Service Call.

by grillrepair on

Now that Viking no longer owns Viking but has put a lot of resources into operating a distribution company we expect some changes in manufacturing and production.  One of the first surprises we had this year is the

disappearance of the old, original Viking  control valve.  The original Viking gas grills had a Viking valve that threaded into the manifold.  later models have a control valve that bolts through the manifold.  The original valves were made of cast aluminum like all the old barbecue grill valves but the bolt-through valves were updated so there is a machined brass replacement valve.  The last batch of the older valves were still fabricated from cast aluminum — the design was never updated.  Now that Viking has run out of the valves they are not going to make any more.

This is a problem for us because we repair barbecues and we need this replacement control valve.  Rather than admit defeat and face the embarrassment of telling customers we cannot repair their barbecue we started thinking about the basic parts of the valve and what the product really needs to fit in the Viking controls.  What we realized is that the Viking control valve is identical to the Charmglow post-mounted barbecues from 30 years ago.  Unfortunately the Charmglow valves have been extinct for more than 10 years so that was not so

helpful.  We kept putting it together and kept at it until we realized we have control valves that will work great in these old Viking models.

As we can see in the image here is the Viking control valve attached to a round pipe gas manifold.  The tip of the control valve will usually have a hood orifice attached where the end of the control valve is inserted into the grill burner.  This valve has an aluminum gas line attached instead of an orifice because this valve attaches to the button controlling the solenoid in the rotisserie button.  Later Viking rotisserie control valves integrate the button and the valve in one product.  This design that has a normal barbecue valve and a separate safety valve button to allow gas to flow to the rotisserie burner is a direct copy of the design by DCS, Dynamic Cooking Systems.

Then a light bulb went on right above my head!

DCS valves also thread into the manifold, have a similar valve stem and Viking and DCS use the same exact hood orifice on the tip of their valves.   So we brought alone some DCS controls to our next Viking barbecue

In this next image we can see the aluminum block valve in the background.  The foreground has the DCS valve that is the same size, same mounting threads, same valve stem and same orifice as the Viking.

We found our replacement for continuing to repair Viking valves.

Here is the same replacement control valve again.  Although Viking no longer makes this replacement valve available we are able to continue to repair Viking barbecue grills with the newer DCS control valve that fits the Viking manifold, control knobs and burners just perfectly.
