BBQ Grill Screens Protect Burner, Valve and Orifice from Spiders.

When a barbecue goes without burning for some time we often have to get into the grill and clean up a few things to make sure everything is working safely. We check leaks, file ignition electrodes, change the battery and wipe the burners. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing everything is working well -- except it isn't. When a spider or other small insect gets into the burner and down through the orifice opening in to the control valve the gas flow is interupted. A lot of different processes fail when there is an impediment insiod ethe control valve because of bugs. These small screens are designed to fit onto the venturi tube of any gas grill burner. At the front of the burner where the air shutter adjustment slides open and closed these screens protect the opening to the venturi and burner.

Burner Protection Screens

Although not very common -- and very uncommon in many climates -- it is possible for certain small insects to crawl into your barbecue burner, climb in through the gas orifice opening and nest inside the front cavity in the control valve. When we try to use the grill the gas is unable to flow through the orifice and does not freely spray into the gas grill burner. Often the grill will not get good gas flow or will have flames shooting out around the fron of the burner and control valve because the gas is being pushed sideways instead of flowing forward. These sets of screens are designed to install over the front of the BBQ burner venturi tube where the air adjustment slides open and closed. The screens have very tightly woven wires that make it difficult, uncomfortable and sometimes impossible for insects to live inside the burner, orifice or valve of your gas grill.

viking control valve

Control valve with a hood style orifice. Hood orifices screw onto the control valve because the threads are inside the brass orifice. Remove the orifice, blow it out and then clean the valve without the orifice attached.

ducane control valve flame thrower

This is a flame thrower control valve. The orifice on a flame thrower valve is a spud style orifice which screws into the control valve. A spud only looks like a bolt with a tiny hole in the center.

how to clean spider web from bbq grill valve and orifice

Not a great drawing but this image from a BBQ manual shows the gas line, manifold, two control valves and the spud style orifices being removed so the inside of the control valve can be cleaned.

Many customers have heard rumors about spiders getting into their gas grill. The spiders and other insects are not problematic inside the burner but when they climb in through the opening in the gas orifice. Inside the control valve they create a home inside the valve -- not inside the orifice -- behind the cavity where the orifice attaches to the valve. Do not remove the orifice and blow it out. Also blow out the throat of the control valve once the orifices have been removed.
