The older DCS gas grill models had a different ignition assembly than the BGB and the BGA models that have dominated the past decade. Over 15 years ago DCS ignition assemblies had mechanical modules that generated sparks by pressing in a tension spring button or spinning a rotary ratchet and the movement created small electronic charges to travel through the wiring and spark at the electrode. Without a bettery or electronic module someone's hand had to prompt the ignition to generate a spark and DCS became proficient at making reliable electrodes and collector boxes so the owner was not spinning or pushing the module all day long.

DCS Grill IgniterThe original gas grill by Dynamic Cooking Systems has a piezo module. This is the same push-button starter used by most barbecue companies at some time. We push the button one time and heard one loud Click and the electrode inside the grill generated one spark. With poorly designed - or dirty! - igniters we would have to hit that button over and over again hoping the electrode was actually sparking. Back then we could not hear the spark popping inside the grill because the push-button piezo module was too loud and we were never sure we were sparking until we felt the heat. In order to be the best of the best -- and DCS was the best of the best -- DCS had to design an electrode that used the same piezo module as everyone else but ignited gas in their grills much faster. |

Note this bracket has a hole for the screw that attaches the electrode to the firewall and a tab that fits into the firewall for additional support in some models. The collector box is open on one side but the models of DCS using this kind of module opened right or left depending on the burner in the 36 and 48 inch models. In those models we have had to sometimes bend the tab in order to use this electrode. This takes about 5 seconds with pliers. |

The igniter bracket is also called the collector box because the stainless steel bracket does not only attach the electrode to the inside of the barbecue. The collector box also protects the tip of the electrode from being coated with drippings in the BBQ. The collector box also causes gas to cloud around the tip where the spark occurs. |

Battery-Powered Module
Nine volt battery modules have been standard in DCS grill models for about 10 years. The electronic battery powered spark generator is available with 4 outlets, 6 outlets and with 8 outlets allowing one module, one button to send sparks to up to 8 electrodes.
DCS Rotary Module
This is one of the rotary modules which is also a Piezo style spark generator. It does not matter what kind of module is attached to the electrode in the grill. The electrode is basically a small spark plug and it will spark no matter what module is sending electricity to it.
DCS ignition electrodes are designed with the architecture of the entire grill. Cross over tubes in each side of the burners line up with the spark in the electrode exactly. DCS is famous for examining every aspect of how the grill functions and making every single part work better. Below is the newer version of the electrode and collector box and this design has been in use for approximately 15 years now.
