The original models of Dynamic Cooking Systems barbecue grills used a stainless tray that held lava rocks. The first few rebuilds had design changes but continued to use lava rocks. About ten years ago the DCS D model brought in new changes including replacing lava rocks with radiant rods. New stainless steel trays support porcelain rods to conduct heat and the model worked so good there have been no changes in the last ten or twelve years since then. The strength of the DCS grilling system is that the rods vaporize dripping moisture and radiate extra heat so the area arounfg the cooking grates becomes hot enough to sear steaks with restaurant quality temperatures.

98123 |
Replacement three pack of 8.5 inch ceramic radiants for original DCS barbecue models. Even heat distribution and searing temperatures. Ceramic rod trays replaced lava rock trays because the ceramic vaporizer grease drippings and radiates an even distribution of additional heat below the grilling surface. |

9123Pack10 |
Pack of 10 ceramic radiants dcs conduct for even distribution and grilling surface temperatures. Porcelain rods are still functional of they are dirty. Rods only need to be replaced when broken. The goal is to absorb and radiate heat -- not look pretty. In lesser barbecues briquettes and lava rocks are used but the evenly spaced porcelain rods in a DCS collaborate to maximize heat distribution at the grilling surface. |

DCS Radiant RodsThe first rod tray used 8.5 inch wide rods. After that model the DCS D models had 9.5 inch rods which are still used in the barbecues sold today. The rod system pushed DCS above any competition and Dynamic Cooking Systems was the most sought after grill in the world before the invention of the infrared burner. DCS radiant rods are hollow inside so they can heat up and cool down faster. The burners heat the air trapped in the closed hood of the barbecue so the hot air surrounds and cooks the food just like any normal barbecue cooking technique. However, while the twenty-five thousand BTU burners are heating up the barbecue the burners also heat the tray of rods installed just above the burner and just below the cooking grates. Once they are hot the rods radiate heat towards the cooking grids so the area around the grate will have the convection heat transferred through air and the additional radiant heat rising off the rods. The double heat makes the grilling grate area much hotter than a traditional barbecue |

Rods Locked In TrayThe original radiant trays that came in the models manufactured for the past 15 years all have a locking arm to hold the rods in place. The locking arm had a long slit hole and the main radiant had a T shaped tab that poked through this slit. Once the rods were placed into the tray the locking arm was laid in place and the tabs bent down so the locking bar could not be accidentally removed. New radiants come with a nut and bolt to hold the lock in place. The nut and bolt should not be tightened more than hand tight. This is a more reliable attachment and makes the lock easier to install and remove. |

Although it is common for a customer to contact us and say I need ALL new rods for my grill it is very rare that anyone really needs all the rods replaced. If the stainless is not being maintained the bend in the tray will eventually break. The weight of the break will eventually break the rods as seen in the image above. These rods are broken cleanly -- not smashed -- and could continue to be used in a new tray. They will still radiate heat if they are cracked or broken cleanly. If the rods are smashed so badly they cannot stay in the tray then they should be replaced.
The other way rods can be damaged is when the cooking grates are being moved. DCS cooking grates are very thick and heavy and if they were dropped into the barbecue the rods would be broken where the grid falls. The rods are locked into the stainless radiant tray so they are very easy to remove as one assembly. The entire tray with the rods locked into place should be periodically removed from the grill, sprayed with a powerful degreaser, washed clean and replaced.
A lot of high-quality American gas grill manufacturers who are still using briquettes have begun creating ways to lock the briquettes into the tray. This is important for cleaning the stainless and the porcelain rods. DCS invented this system over ten years ago. If the rods have chunks of meat and grease attached this will attract small animals to the barbecue. This is very unhealthy. The stainless steel is designed for use outdoors by adding chemicals that protect the material -- if it is cleaned. The difficult task of removing an angled plate stacked high with lava rocks usually causes a huge mess as the greasy lava rocks fall all over the deck as they are removed from the BBQ. The DCS system that locks the rods to the tray makes the heat conduction layer very easy to remove, to clean and replace without a big mess. A little maintenance will doule and triple the life of the grill parts.
