Ignition Assembly Replacements For Emperor Barbecue Grills.

Any barbecue grill ignitor is an assembly of parts working together. An igniter has to have or to generate its own power to spark which generally means a battery, there needs to be a switch of some kind and a spark plug -- a heat resistant electrode -- to spark inside the grill where the gas emits from the burner. A lot of barbecues today integrate one or more pieces into a single movement so the steps of the ignition process seem automatic. The Emperor models we have worked on have had a older system with several ignition pieces working together as shown below.

Double-prong electrodes started becoming common after infrared burners were invented and the design is so much better than other electrode designs that double prong electrodes are used in all kinds of barbecues. This electrode has a flat bracket that installs next to the burner in the Emperor BBQ grill.

This is what is commonly called a universal module or an all-in-one module because the battery, switch and spark generator module is all one product. This module installs by removing the button and sliding the battery holder through the control panel so the button holds the box to the panel. With 4 outlets, electrodes simply plug onto the module and all electrodes will spark together when the button over the battery is pressed.

Ignitor Assembly Architecture.

This image shows the ignition assembly without having the parts of the igniter spread all over the barbecue grill where they belog while in use. In this way we can see the ignitor as a full ignition assembly. When installed the battery button will be installed in the control panel so we only see the button to press and all the rest of the igniter is hidden inside the barbecue.

In the control panel the battery holder button has two wires that connect it to the 2 larger spade outlets on the module. In addition to the 2 wire connections for the battery button there will be smaller spade outlets to connect the electrode wires. When the button is pressed a connection with the battery inside the button will cause all the connected electrode to spark at the same time.

The electrodes shown here as replacements are designed to install in the Emperor barbecue grill just next to the burners. The double post electrode design allows the electrode to be easily set a gap between the steel rods to maximize the effect of the sparking electrode. The long length of the steel rods is also useful because the electrode can be bent to lean-in towards the ports on the burner designed to facilitate the ignition.

Wee can easily bend the electrode so the spark is exactly where the gas is coming through the burner ports.

This image shows the electrode installed in the Emperor barbecue grill. Most electrpdes are installed so the steel plate is inside the barbecue. This usually makes the electrode easier to mount insid ethe barbecue because we are tightening the mounting screws from inside the barbecue. There is little difference though.

What is important is ensuring the electrode wire is completely inside the control panel so heat inside the barbecue cannot damage the wire. As long as we periodically wipe grease and carbon deposits off the dual-post steel electrode this igniter will last forever.

The actual replacement stainless steel briquette radiant is shown here as viewed from the bottom so we can see the four corners where additional supports hold the shield higher than the internal shelf in order to allow a more effective convectional heat.

We can Test the ignition module by pressing the button when the electrpdes are not connected to the back module spark generator. When the button is pressed the spade-outlets will spark agaist one another if they are not plugged into electrode wires
