Replacing barbecue grill control knobs can be very tricky if the original manufacturers controls are no longer available. Although all valve stems have a post that started round and has a slice cut out to make a "D" shape, each barbecue model has a different sized "D" with the flat section or the round section of the "D" using so much space. Also knobs are installed based on the turning of the valve stem so we also see something like "D=6" which means the valve is in the "Off" position when the valve stem is turned so the flat section of the valve is resting in the "6 o'clock" position, or straight down. With this universal control knob we can replace any barbecue controls without all this analysis because each control knob comes with several inserts of varying lengths and "D" openings. The inserts can be inserted to fit any grill models perfectly.

Universal Control KnobAlthough it looks like stainless steel this control knob is thick plastic. Designed to look like the brushed satin finish control knob used on the DCS BGB models the control knob has black grips on the sides and mirror polish to mimick stainless steel. This is a very attractive control knob but it's real value is the back of the knob. The back of the control knob has a square opening that is designed to accept installation of any insert included in thepackage with the knob. The inserts can be installed in any direction so where the flat part of the valve stem does not matter. Also each insert is a different length and the lengths can be easily trimmed with a razor. Whether the replacement control knob needs a long stem under the knob to reach into the control panel to the valve or if the valve stem sticks out past the control panel to be inserted into the knob and any lengths in between -- this is the right replacement knob for the grill. The valve stem will have a post that looks like "D" shape but each grill has its own type of "D". Some ar bigger or smaller and some turn left or right. No matter the style we have used this control knob replacement on all of them without fail. |

Some control knobs just pull off but others need to have a set screw removed before the knob will come off. Look around the circumference of the knob to see if there is a small hole that can be used to access a set screw. Do Not just start pulling off a control knob. Sometimes they are melted inside and sometimes a screw or bolt holds them in place. Forcing a control knob off the valve risks damaging the valve stem.
Once the insert is tightened into the control knob the hole on the other side of the white plastic insert will be the same sided "D" hole as the post of the valve stem. Simply push them together so the knob stays in place. This way if the knob ever needs to be removed we can simply pull it off the grill instead of unscrewing the set screw. We should never need to access the set-screw bolt that holds the universal knob together again.
With this Universal replacement control knob is several inserts. Test the inserts for the correct length and the correct fitting for your valve stem. The lengths can be cut to size if your size is in between the lengths of the inserts. I find it is easier to then remove the insert from the valve stem and attch the set-screw but this can also be completed on the grill. There is a small metal panel in the package with the inserts and knab. Inside the square hole in the back of the knob where the insert installs push this metal plate next to the insert to the white plastic is on one side of the plate and the hole for the bolt on the other side of the plate. Finally, using the bolt included with the metal plate screw the bolt into the plastic opening so it screws through the metal plate and squeezes against the white insert. Once tightened this pieces are impossible to be separated during normal use of the BBQ grill.
