These are the control knobs for the Solaire barbecue grills and these knobs will fit on the valves for all models regardless of whether you have black plastic or stainless steel. We also use these same control knobs on Alfresco Barbecue Grills because both companies use the same valves. It is very rare for the knobs to be damaged or to break for any reason. Usually replacing the control knobs is only an age problem. Over time the colors change and the red indicator line wears out and many customers replace the control knobs because they like the appearance of the newer knob. These knobs are rarely replaced because it is necessary.

Black Plastic KnobThese control knobs are two inch diameter across the round circle of the body of the knob. The back stem sticks out about one-quarter of an inch. The knobs are a black plastic that is made to be very hard. Even though both Alfresco and Solaire gas grills will cook at temperatires above a thousand degrees the knobs will not melt. This is not some magical ingredient in the plastic but the way the heat comes off the infrared burners in the grill the heat never comes near the control knobs. |

This is the back side of the control knob. The inner round circle sticks out from the larger round section of the control knob by about one-quarter of an inch. Cewbntered is the "D" shaped cut-out which is where the valve stem inserts to mount to the valve. The Solaire and Alfresco control valves have split valve stems that allow the D shaped valve stem to be spread larger or squeezed tighter and thei will makes the knobs fit tighter or looser as desired. Also inside the control valve is a set screw to adjust the movement of the valve stem and essentially the movement of the control knob. The knob will need to be pressed in and turned. Because the valve has this safety feature to be pressed-in to turn the knob needs to be tightly attached to the valve stem. |

This is the stainless steel knob for the Solaire infrared and infravection gas grills. While Alfresco designed a much larger control klnob that covers the bezel on the face plae of the control panel Solaire designed a smaller control knob exactly like the black knobs. The 27G model and the GXL deluxe models still have the black plastic knobs when the grills ship new. Models of Solaire 30 inches and larger ship standard with these heavy stainless control knobs.
Solaire gas grills that came with black plastic control knobs can be replaced with these stainless steel control knobs. The size and the D shaped insert in the back of the control knob is the same on both the plastic knob and the stainless knob. This is also the same valve stem used by Alfresco grills and it is common to replace the Alfresco controls with these Solaire knobs because the black plastic is no longer made by Alfresco and the stainless knobs that replace the older controls are a much different design. |

All control valve stems have a D shape because something totally round will be difficult to turn. Matching the flat cut-away section with the hole in the knob allows the knob to hold onto the valve stem and turn. Although it seems to move beautifully when the valve and the knob are new over time the valves do not push in and out so smoothly nor turn high and low so smooth.
Usually the movement becomes a little sticky as time passes because of the lubrication inside the control valve. Heat can slowly - or quickly -- damage the lubrication which cannot be replaced in the valve body. The black control knobs look dried out after a few years outside in the sun but they will work fine even if they are no longer pretty.
Replacing the control knobs is simple. There is only friction from the valve stem holding the knob in place so the knob simply pulls free. Sometimes time and dirt and the expansion and contraction of heating and cooling will make the knob tight but they only pull free and push back on. Remember the valve stem can be adjusted to make the knob fit tighter or looser as comfortable.
