Replacement Thermocouple for Safety Valve Rotisserie or Infrared Burner

Once a barbecue is no longer manufactured and the replacement parts for repairs no longer available we have to use existing grill parts to try to match solutions in order to continue repairing these appliances. This one particular Viking thermocouple fits some of the Turbo brand barbecue safety valves used to connect infrared grill sear-zone burners and the infrared rotisserie burners.

Safety Solenoid Valve

Safety valves are used to cause an automatic shut-off if ever the flames stop burning. Inside the control is a solenoid that blocks the flow of gas. The thermocouple attaches to the valve in the threading shown here and the other end of the thermocouple mounts through the BBQ so the tip of the thermocouple is in the flames.

Inside the tip of the thermocouple are different metals that create a tiny electrical charge when heated. So long as the tip is hot an electrical charge runs down through the thermocouple wire into the valve where a copper coil inside the solenoid creates an electro-magnet. The electro-magnet has just enough strength to hold the solenoid compressed so gas can flow through the valve. As soon as the tip of the thermocouple colls a little bit the electro-magnet cannot hold the solenoid and the solenoid presses back in place to block the flow of gas so nothing can pass through the valve.

Many high-end gas grills today do not use the safety valve and thermocouple any longer because it is so rare for a burner to have its flames blow out and necessitate the safety feature of the solenoid and thermocouple assembly.

The Turbo manifold and control valves in this image are completely different from Viking controls but the cap has the same size and threading as the thermocouple so we can use this thermocouple as a replacement. This manifold has a safety valve for the rotisserie burner in the back of the barbecue and another safety valve for the infrared grill burner.

Across the outside of these course threads the diameter is approximately 5/16 of an inch.

Trying to measure the opening in the aluminum cap of the safety valve where the thermocouple will attach we are at about one-quarter inch diameter.

If this manifold is not your manifold, if this valve is not your valve then check the threads and the sizes to ensure this will fit. Sometimes we have to try and the parts are not the same but our job as technicians is to locate parts that we can use to repair these barbecues that are no longer manufactured and do not have replacement parts available. We are fortunate to realize this thermocouple will work as a replacement for these Turbo models but this does not mean this thermocouple will fit all Turbo models.
