Although most Viking gas grills have a stainless button with a black plastic ignition switch some Viking barbecies have this switch that slides onto the valve stem. Module wires attach directly to the end of this electrical switch so the va;ve creates an electrical current to the electrode simply by turning the control knob.

Viking gas barbecues have been made differently in many ways throughout the years. Oddly Viking schematics claim this barbecue ignition design was never used on outdoor products although having worked on various Viking gas grills through the past 15 years we have come across Viking models with this ignition switch on the valves. |

This image shows the writing on the ignitor switch. Also this image shows the center installation opening shape which allows for the D shaped valve stem to slide through. When the control knob is attached the the valve stem and the control knob turns the center opening of the ignition switch is also moved around to connect the electrical points inside the slide-on switch. The 2 metal plugs at the bottom (actually the top but the bottom of this image) connect to the wires that jump from valve-switch to valve-switch like a daisy chain so each switch is connected to the ignition manifold.

Please note the attachment of the switch is not only sliding the switch onto the D shape valve stem. The plastic form also slides onto the screws in the face-plate of the control valve in order to hold the switch in the correct position. With the valve stem through the center of the ignition and the screws pushed into the plastic brackets the switch will only fit onto the grill controls the correct direction and will be held in place so the valve stem can rotate without rotating the entire switch. |

This image is the old-style control valve. Both style valves looked like this cast aluminum valve in the old Viking grills. To determine the difference look at How The Valve Attaches To The Manifold. The valve either screws into the manifold or it bolts-through the manifold. Today the bolt-through valve in the images above are made like the brass valves all gas grill use but Viking still sells the cast aluminum box valve in this image for the screw-in controls. This switch does not fit properly to the screw-in, cast aluminum valve. Although this image shows the valve stem slides into the center of the switch the brackets do not line-up to the bolts to hold the switch steady. |

Notice the manifold this valve is connected to is a square tube. Gas and propane connect to the manifold so all the control valve can draw gas from the manifold and deliver gas to the burners. Check under the valve because if there is a bolt under the valve then the valve is bolted through the manifold.
The manifold in this image from an old Viking is a round pipe. There will not be a bolt under this manifold because the valve in this image screws into threading into the manifold pipe. Always check by looking under the manifold or feeling under the manifold. On older models both the bolt-through valve and the screw-in valve look the same so always check the manifold connection.
This is the newer design of bolt-through control valve for the Viking gas grill models. The ignition switch fits onto the valve stem of either valve but only the brass bolt-through control matches up the screws in the face of the valve plate so the switch is useful.
