Viking Stainless Steel Infrared Tru-Sear Burner Replacement.
Viking infrared burners are different from other gas barbecue grill infrared burners. The traditional infrared burner has a stainless steel housing topped with ceramic tiles with dozens or hundreds of small burner port holes which causes gas to pressurize in the burner. Gas pressure builds up in the housing below the ceramic tile so the gas presses through the holes under pressure and creates a tiny red flame exponentially hotter than the traditional blue flame denoting burning gas. The Viking Tru-Sear infrared burner is similar except instead of a ceramic tile top the Viking burner is fabricated with what seems to be hundreds of thin layers of stainless steel screening. The burner housing is similar to other infrared burners but the venturi tube is tremendous and the burner seems layered in stainless where the gas pressure pushes through.

Viking Tru-Sear Infrared Burner.This Viking Tru-Sear infrared burner looks different from other infrared grill burners becasue the entire burner is stainless steel. The top of the Viking tru sear burner is layer after layer of stainless mesh screens. Gas pressure pushes through the screening but the stainless also gets hot and radiates the heat across and back through the layers of screening. |
Unlike other grill burners Viking gas grill burners are mounted solid in the barbceue grill. No other infrared burner has mounting flanges like this. TEC burners bolt in place but all the other infrared burners are installed to clip into place with gravity the main support for installing the burner and keeping the burner in the grill. Viking models have mounting brackets in front of the burner and in the back of the burner and under the burner. |

Viking Tru-Sear Burner.The Viking infrared Tru Sear burner looks like an industrial invention with the big thick bolts and wide stainless steel framing along the edge of the support rails. Also the venturi tube is the biggest gas venturi I have seen on any barbecue grill burner anywhere. 
Gas Manifold feeding gas to the Viking bolt-through control valve with long orifice mounted in the infrared tru-sear burner venturi tube. Note the wall inside the control panel with the tru-sear electrode just barely sticking through. The venturi tube is much larger than is necessary for the control valve to feed gas to the infrared burner. The extra space around the orifice acts like a carburetor forcing gas to mix with air as the burner pressurizes. |
Viking Tru-Sear DimensionsTop of infrared burner rectangle without screen is 18.75 inches by 9 1/8 inches. Width at 9 1/8 inches includes the long brackets along the sides of the burner Flat Bracket under venturi tube is 5 inches from the tru-sear burner base and 2 inches wide. Flat Bracket at the bottom back of the burner is 5.25 inches wide and 2 inshes deep. Infrared Tru-Sear Burner venturi tube is 3.75 inches long and opening has a 2.25 inch diameter. Total Length of infrared Tru-Sear burner is 22 7/8 inches long. As we can see in the image of the valve above the infrared tru sear burner in Viking grills pulls a lot of air and a lot of gas to pressurize this burner casing. The Viking burner has layers of steel screens instead of the thick ceramic tile on top of the burner for pressurized gas flames to heat-up the grill. The burner has brackets on all four sides to keep these screens bracketed in place. When a Viking owner has to replace their infrared tru sear burner the problem is usually these screens rusting or corroding. |

The most obvious difference between the infrared Viking burner in the images on the page above and these tru-sear burner images is the placement of the electrode. The majority of the Viking Tru-Sear infrared grill burners has the double prong electrode mounted to the burner in the front side next to the venturi tube. However there was a Viking model with a slightly different TruSear burner that has the electrode mounted in the back of the grill.
This different trusear Viking infrared grill burner also has a wide flange on the bottom of the burner but the more common infrared burner does not have that long stainless flange. This piece looks like a stand for the burner to be a little higher than where the bottom of the burner would otherwise stand with the bottom of the burner on the floor of the barbecue grill.

The Viking Model VGIQ-4103-RE is not the only Viking gas grill model with an infrared Tru Sear burner but this exploded parts schematic shows the grill as a hybrid. This Viking gas grill model has an infrared burner and a stainless steel U shaped burner and two of the straight pipe burners that Viking calls smoker burners. This model also shows a smoker box and the details even show the ignition flash tubes and protective plate that is a weather cover for the Viking infrared burner.
